MOKUME GANE

The art of wood-grain metal.

Mokume gane brings together contrasting metals to create flowing patterns reminiscent of the grain in wood. Its name translates as “wood-grain metal”, describing a surface whose detail emerges from the layers within. Subtle variations in colour and line give each piece its own character, revealing more the closer you look.

Developed in Japan during the seventeenth century, the technique is generally attributed to the master metalworker Shoami Denbei. Originally used to embellish sword fittings, it belonged to a sophisticated tradition in which these objects expressed their owners’ status and taste. The craftsmanship devoted to their decoration gave rise to some of Japan’s most remarkable metalworking techniques.

Creating mokume gane requires patience, precision and a deep understanding of how different metals behave. Layers of contrasting metals are bonded using carefully controlled heat and pressure, then forged, carved and worked to reveal the layers beneath. The choice of metals and the way they are manipulated determine the pattern: fine, closely drawn lines, broad flowing curves or swirling forms that recall knots in timber. The pattern is integral to the metal itself, continuing beneath its surface.

During the 1970s, Hiroko Sato Pijanowski and Eugene Pijanowski helped renew international interest in mokume gane after studying the technique in Japan. Through their teaching and experimentation, they contributed to its wider adoption by contemporary jewellers and metalsmiths. Yet it remains a highly specialised discipline, practised by relatively few contemporary jewellers because of the technical knowledge and sustained experience it demands.

At ANPA, we have spent nearly twenty-five years researching, developing and refining our approach to mokume gane. This ongoing exploration has deepened our understanding of its possibilities, bringing together exacting craftsmanship and a willingness to experiment with metals, patterns and form. We often combine its richly patterned surfaces with precious gemstones, carefully considering how colour, light and texture interact within each design.

For us, mokume gane is both a long-standing commitment and a continuing discovery. Each piece expresses the individuality of its making, carrying a centuries-old Japanese technique into our own contemporary jewellery.
